Which Processor

Which Processor Should You Buy?

Intel Celeron Chip:

A few months ago, Intel introduced a new computer chip called the Celeron. If  you don't follow computers very closely, you may not have even heard about this new chip. However, you should be aware of its existence because this chip does  not give you the performance that you might expect.

The Celeron is a Pentium chip with the cache removed. In simple terminology, the cache is an extra part of computer memory that holds the most recently used  data. Cache allows the computer to access the data faster. A Pentium chip without cache is slower than the normal Pentium chip, which has a built-in  cache. In my opinion, this is a disabled chip. The new 266-MHz Celeron has less processing power than a full 233-MHz Pentium chip.

The Celeron chip was developed for the low-end personal computers. This chip is meant to be less expensive, thus keeping the computer price down. As such, maybe there is a place for the Celeron chip. My complaint is actually more with the marketing of the chip than with the chip itself. The Celeron is marketed as  a Pentium chip. This leads us to believe that a 266 MHz Celeron is just as fast as any other 266 MHz Intel chip, but in fact, the Celeron is slower. So again, we are being led to believe that the Celeron is a fast chip. In this case, the name of the chip itself is somewhat misleading.

When purchasing a new computer, you can easily get a Celeron chip when you think  you are buying a full-blown Pentium chip. For the most part, I have found that the average salesperson doesn't even realize that the Celeron chip is any  different from the Pentium chip. Since the labels and much of the documentation just say "Pentium," it is sometimes difficult to ascertain which chip you are actually receiving. It used to be that any chip labeled "Intel" was a good chip. Now, you have to determine which Intel chip you are getting. This has made the purchasing of a new computer more complicated than ever.
