Windows Tip: ScanDisk

Use ScanDisk to diagnose and repair your hard drive.

If you've ever accidentally turned off a PC without going through the required protocol, then you've experienced ScanDisk. This program detects hard drive errors after an improper shutdown and fixes them. You can also use this utility at any time to find files that no longer have associations and to get rid of them.

To use ScanDisk, follow these directions:

  1. Single-click the Start button, mouse-over Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and then click ScanDisk.
  2. Under the type of test, click Thorough.
  3. Click Start to begin scanning your hard drive.

Uncheck "Automatically fix errors" if you'd like to specify how ScanDisk repairs errors it finds.
