Windows allows you to manipulate the amount of information
your computer displays about individual folders and files.
Click Start, Settings, Folder Options, then the View tab.
Tell your folders how to display their contents. For
example, uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file
types" checkbox to display file extensions such as .txt and
.doc. The file extension tells your computer which default
program to use to open the file.
Most people should check:
- Display the full path in title bar
- Show all files (This command also will make your
backup files visible.)
- Remember each folder's view settings
- Uncheck hide file extensions for known file
types
Click Cancel to exit Folder Options without making
changes, Apply to make your new settings stick, or OK to
apply your new settings and exit Folder Options. Apply
identical settings to all of your folders at once by
clicking Reset All Folders. Press Restore Defaults and Apply
to return to the default settings or start over.
If you want to see the changes take place, simply click
My Computer, View, Folder Options, and the View tab. Try
different options in the Advanced Settings area by checking
or unchecking a box and clicking Apply. Here you can also
apply identical settings to your folders with the Like
Current Folder button.
