Level  I User Computer Tips

Always use a power strip/surge protector.
NEVER plug (non computer) appliances into that same power strip.
Heat and electronics don't mix well. Keep your computer cool.
Magnets will destroy your data. Keep them away from your computer and all data storage media.
Static electricity can zap your data and damage or erase it. If your computer is in a carpeted room, consider purchasing a static free mat. Always touch metal to  discharge before you touch your machine.
Do not drink beverages near your computer. Liquid spilled in your keyboard can be a serious no no.
If Windows won't load, check floppy drive for diskette.  Remove diskette and windows should load  properly.

Level  II User Computer Tips

Scandisk and defrag  your hard drive on a regular basis.
Use an antiviral program at all times. The programs that can be updated via  the  internet are preferred.
Screen Savers are fun but remember that they waste memory and hard drive space.  Screen Savers can also cause software conflicts.
Refrain from using "bootleg" software. It's illegal and you can't use  the benefit of software support.
Remove your floppy disk from it's drive before you power up or down. If you  leave the floppy inserted and it is infected with a virus. You can infect the  boot sector.
If you are experiencing low resource warnings, the best way to correct this is to reboot your  machine.  This is a Windows quirk.  Reboot your machine  periodically.

Level  III User Computer Tips

Do not delete your programs but use the uninstall command to remove programs.
If your mouse delays or seems to stick, take your track ball out and clean the contact points with a clean cloth. Dirty contacts can decrease the performance  of the mouse.
To clear History on IE:  Tools > Internet Options > Click on Clear History

Level  IV User Computer Tips

When using AOL use "*70 before the phone number to disable call waiting if you have that  service. This will prevent an incoming call from disconnecting you while you are  online.

Level  V User Computer Tips

Download "tweakui" from the ZDNet software library and use this  utility to edit the Windows operating system.
Before using fdisk or  formatting the hard drive ABSOLUTELY make sure you have all of your software  which includes operating system, drivers, backed up data files, etc.

Windows Key + E - Opens Windows Explorer
Windows Key + M - Minimizes All Windows
Windows Key + D - Switches between  minimizing all open programs and showing them all
Windows Key + F - Opens the Find  Window
Windows Key + R - Opens the Run Window
Windows Key + Break/Pause - Opens  System Properties
Windows Key + Tab - Cycles through  items on the task bar
Windows Key - Opens the Start Menu

General Shortcuts

ALT+ F4 - Quit a program / Shut down
ALT + TAB - Navigates between applications 
CTRL + ESC - Display the Start menu
SHIFT + TAB - Tab backwards through a form
CTRL + X - Cut to Clipboard
CTRL + C - Copy to Clipboard
CTRL + V - Paste to Clipboard
CTRL + P - Print
CTRL + O - Open File
CTRL + B - Bold Face
CTRL + I - Italics
CTRL + U - Underline
F1 - Help menu
CTRL + Z - Undo
CTRL + Y - Redo
SHIFT + Restart - To restart just  windows and not your whole computer, hold down the shift key when you click  the OK button on the shutdown screen. Saves lots of time.
